Not long after the bull is sold, Mitt’s dad leaves to work in the city. His shoulder are broad and tight and angry as he leaves his young wife and son on the defunct, bankrupt farm. He spits into the dike on his way out—an old, reassuring, familiar gesture and with the hope of the young Mitt looks up to see if his mother is also back to normal. But no, Milda’s cheerful dimple is still hidden in the slowly developing crease of worry.

It doesn’t take long for them to follow his footsteps, two kids adrift without the steadying adult in their lives.
